The Indians remained in this area for a while after Chief Sashabaw died. However, as more settlers moved to Clarkston-Independence Township, the Indians were not able to live as they had lived in the past. The white settlers took the Indians' hunting grounds for farmland. Many Indians were forced to move to the central part of the United States.
