The Clarkston Mills [1] [2] [3]

Before settling in Clarkston-Independence Township, Jeremiah had lived in Detroit for a time and owned a bakery there. When he moved to Clarkston, he and Nelson built a grist mill after they bought the saw mill. A grist mill grinds wheat into flour to make bread.

The Clark brothers knew that the settlers would need both wood for their homes and flour to make bread to eat.
