The Clark family worked to improve the
small village that was being settled. They planted the first apple trees, which they had brought from New
York. They built a fish hatchery stocked with brook trout, opened a general store, and
acted as postmasters.
Because of all the things they did to help the town, the settlers of
this area held the Clark brothers in high esteem. The people were grateful for what the
Clark brothers had done. In 1842, they voted to name the village Clarkston.
